Kyle's fundraiser for The Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice

Kyle Hounsome is raising money for Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice
In memory of Peter (Pete) Edwards

5 day, 180 mile bike ride to Devon to join the Peaceful Pilgrimage up Holdstone Down · 21 July 2025

Chestnut Tree House is the children’s hospice for East Sussex, West Sussex, Brighton and Hove and South East Hampshire, caring for 300 children and young adults from 0-19 years of age every year, both at the hospice and in families’ own homes.

Story

With phase 1 of my Chestnut Tree House fundraiser complete and over £500 raised, I have decided to incorporate a phase 2 to raise the remaining £482 of my initial £1000 target. The intention now is to exceed my target and let the final total be whatever it is meant to be!

From the 21st-25th of July 2025 I will cycle roughly 180 miles from my home in Wecock Farm, Hampshire to Combe Martin, Devon.

On the 26th of July 2025 I will join the Aetherius Society on their pilgrimage up Holdstone Down for which the intention is walking for world peace. The pit stops I have mapped out along my journey (that are open to change where necessary) are The New Forest, Dorchester, Taunton, Dulverton and Combe Martin. The distance from Combe Martin to Holdstone Downs summit is roughly 4 miles which I will walk, and then back again to Combe Martin.

I am doing this in menory of my father Pete who passed away aged just 56 in 2021.

Almost £6 million is needed every year to provide care for the children and their families at the Chestnut Tree House, Sussex. Very little is government funded. The majority comes from donations, fundraising, gifts in wills, shops, the Chestnut Tree House lottery and volunteering.

Phase 1 was incredible. I set out to walk 108 miles over 7 days. The actual distance I covered over 7 days was 131.08 miles. I walked from Wecock Farm to Avebury Henge from the 18th-21st of June 2025 and had projected to walk 60 miles in that time frame, but in fact walked 75 miles. Things changed at Avebury on the solstice and so after revaluating and spending Sunday the 22nd of June 2025 at my 92 years young aunts, I carried on my walk from the 23rd-25th of June 2025 with the new finish line of South Parade Pier in Portsmouth. I walked 56 miles from Andover to Portsmouth over those 3 days, arriving on my 38th birthday!

I slept outdoors for 4 of the 7 days. One of the days I slept in the studio of a 24 hour gym, another I slept at my aunts and another I slept in a hospital which was on the day I made changes to my plans.

***Everything below this sentence I wrote prior to my initial fundraiser walk that I began on the 18th of June 2025 and have kept it here as a record.***

On June 18th 2025 I will be walking 60 miles from Wecock Farm to Avebury Henge over 3 days. I intend to camp at Winchester, Andover and then Avebury. However, the exact pitstops will manifest organically as the journey unfolds.

On June 21st and from Avebury Henge I will be provided a lift to Basingstoke. I will then walk a further 48 miles from Basingstoke to The Chestnut Treehouse in Sussex to arrive on June 24th for a tour that I have booked there, the day before my 38th birthday which is on the 25th.

My father Peter Edwards, Pete, (Peter Pan) passed away suddenly aged just 56 on April 1st 2021. This was one year after I had been sectioned onto a psychiatric ward at St. James' hospital in Portsmouth for the very first time. I was there for 3 weeks. His passing occurred as I was navigating the after effects of this, and as I and the rest of the world were attempting to go back to work, following the events of 2020.

I am walking in memory of my father whilst fundraising donations for the Chestnut Tree House children's hospice. Just Giving do not charge any fees (they provide their service via donations also) and ensure that all monies raised go directly to the charity.

I will be documenting my journey along the way via Tiktok and Instagram. I will go live on Tiktok each evening and sporadically whilst walking. All my links are below.
