Kwadwo's Story
I understand first-hand the power of technology in transforming lives, and believe in the ability of entrepreneurial skills to enable communities to take charge of their own futures.
I started my educational journey at Achimota Primary School in Accra, before having the chance to study Integrated Rural & Industry at KNUST ahead of gaining an MBA at the Central University College. I started my career as a clerk with SSNIT, before bowing out of corporate life to begin a lifelong entrepreneurial journey, leading to the eventual establishment of Saka Homes, arguably one of the leading real estate brands in Accra.
Recognising the opportunities I've had along my journey, I've looked to use my business skills and entrepreneurial drive to ignite change for others, and have actively supported many education, health and social responsibility projects including building a full-equipped new ward in Achimota hospital.
As I travel from Accra to London with the Wanderlust Ghana team this summer, I look to you for support in making this experience no exception in supporting the EduSpots project and enabling thousands of people across 50 communities in Ghana and Kenya to have access to technology, building entrepreneurial skills in over 250 local volunteers.
The EduSpots Story
Across the last 7 years, through the remarkable efforts of a grassroots network of over 250 local community volunteers and a small staff team, EduSpots has created 50 innovative and sustainable community-led libraries across 16 regions of Ghana and Kenya named ‘Spots’.
Local change makers (a mix of teachers, students, and community members) lead a range of EcoSTEM, creative literacy, girls’ empowerment and, early years clubs, alongside wider community-led activities. Together, they impact an estimated 15,000 learners each year, advancing core skills in literacy, STEM and leadership, whilst promoting a lifelong love of learning.Volunteers have opportunities to join regular in-person and online training sessions, enabling them to collaborate with change makers across Ghana and Kenya and develop their skills in education, entrepreneurship and leadership.EduSpots won the Tes International Award in 2018 and was selected as a Finalist for the Their World Education Innovation Prize in 2023. Their Founder, Cat Davison, was selected as a finalist for the UNESCO-backed, Varkey Foundation $1 million Global Teacher Prize in 2021.
Technological Transformation
Currently, there is very limited technology across the Spots. Through this campaign, we aim to provide tablets for each of the 50 Spots, accompanied with regular online and in-person training to ensure effective usage and maintenance.Related to this, EduSpots have plans to create an app that would enable learners of all ages to access resources and learning opportunities, whilst empowering communities with the tools to advance the sustainability and quality of their systems, supporting the wider monitoring and evaluation of EduSpots activities in the process.
