Story
I’m fundraising for Tenovus Cancer Care as they bring treatment, emotional support and practical advice to the heart of the community.
In particular, I am supporting Claire's Campaign, which will be launched next Wednesday 15th May, when the Senedd will be debating the Health and Social Care Committee report - Unheard: Women's journey through gynaecological cancer.
Claire O'Shea was diagnosed with incurable cancer in her uterus – Sarcoma - in 2023, two years after first raising her symptoms and concerns with her GP.
Initially being diagnosed with IBS, she faced delays and misdiagnosis at every turn. It was only when a masseuse in Turkey asked her if she was pregnant that Claire feared it might be something more serious.
Only after seeing a female GP, Claire was referred for cancer testing, where she was later diagnosed with stage four cancer, which has spread to her lungs, liver and hip bone.
Around 1,200 people a year are diagnosed with gynaecological cancers in Wales, and Claire's story of being dismissed and misdiagnosed by GPs reflects what hundreds of women experience every year.
Tenovus helps thousands of cancer patients cope after a diagnosis and gives them hope for the future. Your donation would help to amplify women’s voices and support our campaigning to change the culture of dismissing women’s voices in healthcare settings. Currently, we are calling for the Welsh Government to implement changes as outlined in the Committee report.
Anything would be greatly appreciated! Thank you
