Kit's Hike for Bats!

Big Green Hike · 6 April 2024 to 7 April 2024 ·
The Bat Conservation Trust is an amazing organisation (and yes I am biased) that achieves huge amounts for bats, in collaboration with our many partners. I am really pleased to find a challenge that I can take part in to raise money for bats.
I have a problem with my knee (misaligned patella for those who are interested in these things....) that means I am not able to walk long distances, so I will be aiming for a relatively modest eight miles over the weekend. Even this will be challenging for me and I hope I make it!
I will be visiting the place where I saw my first bat in a hand - Wimpole Estate in Cambridgeshire. A barbastelle - I know I am very lucky! This experience really set me off on the bat journey that I am still continuing and loving. I will divide my eight miles over two days and am yet to decide on the second part - watch this space....
For those of you don't know so much about bats, here are a few bat facts:
- There are 18 resident species in the UK (and more than 1,400 worldwide)
- The smallest bat in the UK has a body about the length of your thumb, and the largest is about the width of a palm
- In the UK they all eat insects and play an incredibly important role in our ecosystems
- They are truly amazing - they navigate by using echoes and live to a surprisingly long age - the oldest known bat was 41 years old!
If you are able to make any donation to the work of the Bat Conservation Trust I would really appreciate. Every pound will make a difference
