Story
Dementia / Alzheimers - an uninvited and unwelcome guest in my family, in the families of friends and in the lives of so many.
There are currently 900,000 people living with dementia in the UK and this is projected to rise to 1.6 million by 2040. The scale and the need to prevent, diagnose and support people with dementia will only become greater.
Dementia is caused by diseases that damage the brain. They affect memory and ability to think and communicate. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia.
Every person’s experience is different and unique, but many people find everyday activities like going to the shops, remembering appointments, and managing bills and letters difficult. Over time, as dementia gets worse, a person will need more support to carry out other activities of daily living such as eating, getting dressed and washing.
The Alzheimer's Society invests in crucial research, as well as providing support and respite to those with Dementia and their loved ones.
