Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My Father Jack (Jackie) Scullion was an extraordinary person. Raised into humble beginnings in rural Ireland he was very smart, winning a scholarship to a prestigious secondary school. However, due to his family’s limited means, university was out of the question so Dad went straight into work in a number of roles. Firstly at a brick factory then moving to Canada where he worked in a gold mine for 3 years. He eventually settled in London where he ended up forging a long and hugely successful banking career in the City of London mainly acting as a troubleshooter which led him to work in a number of countries around the world.
Dad was a hugely charismatic, engaging and cultured man with a great sense of humour. He also had that wonderful Irish gift as a storyteller. He never forgot where he came from, was always very straight and down to earth with people and was a loving family man who supported his kids in their life’s endeavours.
Dad was diagnosed with Myeloma in 2008 and although he battled bravely for 7 years he succumbed to it in 2015 at home, surrounded by his loving family.
What is Myeloma?
Each year in the UK, approximately 5,900 people are diagnosed with myeloma. Myeloma, also known as multiple myeloma, is a blood cancer arising from plasma cells. At any one time there are around 24,000 people living with myeloma in the UK. It accounts for 15% of blood cancers, and 2% of all cancers. Myeloma mainly affects those over the age of 65, however, it has been diagnosed in people much younger.
My 3000 Mile Cycling Challenge
I am a keen road cyclist and have set myself a target of cycling a minimum of 3000 miles this year in aid of Myeloma UK.
This means I will have to cycle at least 750 miles a quarter 😳😳….However, I have been busy during the cold dark winter months, clocking up 1110 miles to date so am well on track to meet my target as we move into the warmer, longer summer months where I can cycle more often.
I aim to raise £3000 for Myeloma UK and any donations would be gratefully received via the attached Just Giving link.
I will provide regular updates on my progress through the year (including my Garmin stats) 🚴🚴♂️🚴
