Story

Hi, my name is Kian and not long after my 16th birthday and having played for my County Schools U16 football team just after Christmas, I noticed a lump in the lymph node on my neck. After visiting my doctor and a having a series of tests done very quickly, I was originally diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma with spleen and bone involvement. This meant a course of chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant and my future plans were put on hold.

I decided to face the treatment and diagnosis with positivity and maturity and carry doing what I could do. I continued to revise and sit my GCSE’s at school, attend Air Cadets (doing my Bronze DofE expedition in Yorkshire) and carrying on playing football with my grassroots teams, winning the County Cup in March, as well as refereeing locally.

I was fortunate enough to have my biopsy reviewed and after 3 rounds of CHOP treatment, I was re-diagnosed to Hodgkin Lymphoma. This meant a change of chemotherapy treatment, which will run to the end of July.

I have had great assistance and care from the consultant and nurses at the Royal Hallamshire and lucky to have used the Teenage Cancer Room to allow me to revise and receive my treatment. I have also had great support from family, friends, school, my local community and the sporting community in which I play in.

My future plans are to study Sports Science at College, then University with a view to applying for selection for the Royal Marines. These are still my ambitions.

As my fitness has been important in fighting this, along with continuing to play sports, I wanted to run to raise funds for charity for those going through the same as myself. I love reading about the mindset of the Royal Marines and the inspiration for the run comes from the 30 mile march they have to undertake in 8hrs across Dartmoor. My run will not be as picturesque and on flatter land but I intend to do 10 miles on 3 consecutive days to give me the quickest time possible.

As I am unable to split between charities on this site and though I think the Lymphoma Action and the Royal Marines Charity are worthy causes, any funds raised from this run will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust. Money raised from a bake sale at Easter time by Katie & Chloe will go to Lymphoma Action and organised events from my school have gone to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Thank you for any contributions.
