Running for Change: Supporting Awutu-Winton School in Ghana
Education changed my life, and now, I want to help change someone else’s.
I was born and raised in Ghana, where I lived until I was 16. Many of my friends had to drop out—not because they lacked ambition, but because they couldn’t afford school fees. Some didn’t have textbooks, others went to class hungry. Education, something so many take for granted, was a privilege not everyone had access to.
At 16, my life changed. I was awarded a full bursary to study at Canford School in the UK—a life-changing opportunity that gave me access to world-class education, sports, and community life. More importantly, it taught me the power of giving back.
During my time at Canford, I volunteered every Monday—working at a therapeutic farm and a Fair Trade charity shop. Seeing the impact of fair wages on Ghanaian farmers reminded me of the children back home who were desperate for an education but lacked the means to get one. I knew that one day, I had to do something about it.
Why Awutu-Winton School?
Canford has a long-standing partnership with Awutu-Winton School in Ghana through the EDP Trust, providing free secondary education to disadvantaged students.
After finishing my A-Levels, I visited Awutu-Winton myself. The students I met were preparing for their final exams, determined to change their futures.
One student, Daniel Asamoah, shared his story with me:
"This school has been a blessing to me and my family. With a free secondary education, I now have the opportunity to attend university in Ghana to study computer science. I want to graduate, find a job, and support my family."
Daniel’s story reminded me of my own journey. I was given a chance, and now, I want to give back.
The Challenge: Reading Half Marathon 2025
On 23rd March 2025, I’ll be running the Reading Half Marathon to raise funds for Awutu-Winton School.
But this is just the start. I’ll continue fundraising until July 2025, when I return to Ghana to personally deliver the funds and volunteer at Awutu-Winton—teaching Economics and Business and coaching rugby, football, cricket, and even water polo.
This isn’t just about raising money—it’s about making a real, lasting impact.
How You Can Help
Every penny raised will go directly towards:
✅ School fees for students who otherwise couldn’t afford an education
✅ Books, uniforms, and learning materials
✅ Meals, so students can focus on their studies without worrying about hunger
For many of these students, education is their only hope of breaking the cycle of poverty. A small donation can change a life.
Make a Difference Today
I know what it’s like to come from a background where education isn’t guaranteed. And I also know how life-changing it is when someone gives you a chance.
If you can donate, thank you. If you can’t, please share this with others who might be able to help.
Together, we can make every step count—both on the Reading Half Marathon track and in changing lives in Ghana.
