Story
On 6th June, the 80th anniversary of D-Day, I took part in a 23km walk to honour the bravery and sacrifice of the D-Day generation. I was walking with Royal Marines Commandos, Royal Marines Association (RMA) members, the French community and other friends to raise funds for RMA - The Royal Marines Charity.
RMA - The Royal Marines Charity exists to help the entire Royal Marines family - those serving, veterans, and families. They provide support for physical and mental health and wellbeing, education and training, as well as assistance to the wounded and bereaved. Their dedication to supporting the Royal Marines community is truly inspiring.
Although I have no personal connection with the Royal Marines myself, fate or fortune has led me to become part of their family - on the periphery, perhaps. About 15 years ago, I stumbled across 47 Royal Marine Commando's extraordinary wartime story and had the privilege of meeting some of the veterans. Their bravery and achievements left me in awe. It surprised me how little known their story and sacrifices were.
This encounter set me on a personal mission - to continue commemorating these brave men and keeping their story alive. For over 13 years now, I have been part of a small team of volunteers who organise an annual walk in their honour. The walk retraces 47 Royal Marine Commando's epic D-Day mission with a 23km trek behind enemy lines from 'Gold Beach' to liberate Port en Bessin.
Along this journey, we were greeted by French mayors,s chool children and community members. We joined them in remembering the 46 men killed and many more wounded during that fateful mission. We also paid tribute to the brave contributions and casualties among the local community including many who were killed.
I am reaching out to you today because your support can make a significant difference. If you can spare even a little for RM Charity, it would mean a great deal to me.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
