Story
On Sunday 27th April 2025 I’ll be running 26.2 miles at the TCS London Marathon in aid of the MS Society 😊
As some of you may know, I was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) in 2020… MS is an unpredictable and incurable condition that affects people's central nervous systems. It can attack suddenly or progress steadily causing damage to the coating that surrounds nerve cells, which results in communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body. MS is associated with a range of debilitating symptoms.
I’ve always enjoyed running however during my earlier experiences with MS I was very fatigued and had lost much feeling in my legs, hands and arms which stopped me from taking part in my usual running routines… that might not seem like a big deal, but we were also in the days of COVID where a little headspace and exercise was pivotal in managing day to day life. It goes without really saying, that my initial experience with MS was frightening and isolating as our usual support networks where mostly absent due to social distancing, and medical appointments were delayed with the expectation that you receive medical advice and treatment options alone.
In comes the MS Society… during this time I checked out this wonderful charity’s website and called their helpline to help me understand more about my new diagnosis and treatment options; I spoke with a lovely MS Nurse who offered me reassurance and understanding. What’s more, the MS Society also funds vital research into the causes of MS and possible treatments- incredibly important work if we ever want a future free of MS.
Fast forward 4 years and with many thanks to our incredible NHS; I am now a grateful recipient of an ongoing treatment regime that has so far kept MS relapse at bay. I don’t live symptom free, but they are managed, and I have been running again for the past few years completing my first post-diagnosis half marathon in October 2023. I love having the energy again to get back out there.
Taking part in this marathon will be a privilege that I won’t take for granted and to do so whilst raising funds for a charity that helped me and that continues to support others living with MS will be amazing. I know that it is possible to live and still thrive and enjoy life with MS. So, let’s go! 26.2 miles are waiting.
Best wishes,
Kelly x
