Story
KCL Womxn in STEM (WiSTEM) was founded at King's College London in 2015 by a group of students in the departments of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). We are a network of students, professionals, academics, and researchers who aim to support underrepresented women and non-binary individuals in STEM.
The root causes of the gender disparity in STEM are diverse, and intersectional and require a multifaceted approach. Thus, WiSTEM is motivated to work with departments and societies at King's College London to work towards gender parity throughout academic and industrial STEM fields. This is how we do it:
- To ensure the safety, happiness and inclusivity of all our members, we have appointed a lead to spearhead wellbeing, inclusivity and outreach initiatives.
- We deliver high-quality virtual and in-person events, caring about the safety and well-being of our members.
- We have seen our membership numbers double annually, and this year will be no exception, considering the heights reached in the 23/24 academic year.
- We have seen extensive social network reach amassing over 2000 followers across both LinkedIn and Instagram.
In previous years, our society has been awarded a KCLSU Gold Society Award as well as the Ada Lovelace Prize for our efforts in improving diversity, wellbeing and collaboration with other societies. Most recently, we were awarded the Breaking Barriers Award by Bright Network.
We are more than just a society. Since 2021, our Policy Lobbying and Advocacy (PLA) team have held positions on multiple Faculty boards, attending meetings and presenting on policies to improve the overall experience for all women pursuing STEM degrees.
We aim to:
- To support and encourage all intersections of women and non-binary people in STEM to continue their career in academia including people of colour, trans people, people with disabilities, people holding religious beliefs, socioeconomic status, sexuality and lobbying the institution for this cause.
- Educating the wider university community about the issues faced by women and non-binary people in STEM
- Empower individuals to seek opportunity, knowledge and a sense of community in STEM through mentorships schemes and events organised by our society.
