Story
Hello and thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) at 5 years old, and navigate its daily highs and lows with the support of my family and friends. To mark 20 years of living with T1D, I will be running the 2025 London Marathon on my 25th birthday.
T1D is a serious autoimmune condition that occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks beta cells within the pancreas, which then stop producing insulin. As a result, glucose levels in your blood start to rise, and your body can’t function unless you replace the insulin. T1D requires relentless 24/7 monitoring of glucose levels and delivery of insulin, as well as consideration of 50+ factors that impact glucose levels including sleep, weather, stress, and exercise.
Exercise plays a key role for me in managing the physical and mental highs and lows of T1D. However, running with T1D can feel like a minefield: with a 5k requiring as many sweets and energy gels as the average marathon, to prevent and treat low glucose levels. I will be sharing the highs and lows of my training journey on Strava with the aim of raising awareness of T1D and £2000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
JDRF funds national and international research into cures, treatment, and prevention, and offers support for the 400,000 people living with T1D and its complications in the UK. JDRF campaigns are increasing access to technology, including the Continuous Glucose Monitor and Hybrid Closed Loop Insulin Pump systems that have transformed my quality of life.
I would hugely appreciate any and every donation to my T1D marathon mission. Your efforts will help people like me live better with T1D, prevent people from ever developing it, and one day find a cure.
Thank you for all of your support,
Katy Peggie
* Note - the JDRF name and branding is changing to Breakthrough T1D as of October 2024, however the charity number and commission remains the same and fundraising will carry-over.
