Story
My father-in-law was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2017. He is one of the good guys in life: someone who is eager to help others, kind-hearted and an inspiration to all that know him. I am proud to be running Edinburgh Marathon to raise money for Cure Parkinson's who fund research to find new treatments that slow, stop or reverse the progression of Parkinson's.
Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition which causes problems in the brain and gets worse over time. There are over 40 symptoms of Parkinson's, but the main symptoms are a tremor (shaking), slowness of movement, muscle stiffness, and walking and balance problems. Currently there is no cure.
Parkinson's is the fastest growing neurodegenerative condition in the world. Every hour, two people in the UK are told they have Parkinson's and over 145,000 people in the UK are currently living with the condition. Estimates suggest that 1 in 37 people alive today will be diagnosed with Parkinson's in their lifetime.
I have made a short video to share his story to help raise awareness of Parkinson's and to help others understand how regular exercise can help you to live well with the condition. If you would like to watch the video, and learn more about the benefits of exercise for Parkinson's, then please visit @theparkinsonscoach on instagram.
