Story
Hi everyone, thank you so much for visiting our JustGiving page.
Myself (Katie), and two of my amazing colleagues, Lauren and Molly, will be taking part in a superhero triathlon series to raise money for the charity White Lodge Centre on August 12th at Dorney lake!
At this event, amongst many other individuals, we will be doing a 400m swim, 10k cycle and a 2.5km run, where we will be helping to showcase what can be achieved for those with disabilities.
All 3 of us met whilst working alongside eachother as supervisors for play and youth schemes at White Lodge Centre hence our team name, the 'Supertrisors'! :). These schemes provide day respite care for families with disabilities and we have been united in our passions to deliver fun and accessible schemes allowing these individuals to access fulfilling experiences. White Lodge Centre also provides a variety of other services that have incredible impact and outreach for the disability community, therefore driving us to partake in this event to raise money for this amazing cause!
For us to take part in this event, one of us to has to have a disability. Anyone that knows me (Katie) is fully aware of how openly I discuss my bowel movements (definitely in too much detail sometimes!). However I have chosen to be so open with this to help debunk the stigmatisations associated with Crohn's disease, which I was diagnosed with in 2020.
Crohn's disease comes under the wider umbrella term of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in which the immune system attacks the bowel causing it to become inflamed and damaged. I had symptoms of Crohn's disease for 10 months before I was hospitalised in 2020 due to the severity of my symptoms and lack of awarness of IBD. This was when I was given a diagnosis and started receiving a miracle drug called Infliximab that turned my life around. I have been receiving this drug intravenously via an infusion every 8 weeks since then, and I have had just over 20 infusions now! This is a huge milestone as not many people are lucky enough to respond to the drug for this long! Luckily my Crohn's is now mostly in remission, however cardiovascular exercise and my Crohn's do not mix very well so this event will be a great challenge!
With all invisible disabilities, lack of awareness and stigma associated with them can have detrimental impacts on an individuals life. By taking part in this event, we want to raise awareness for those with disabilities and emphasise with the right adjustments and encouragement, anything is possible for these individuals!
Therefore, any donation, big or small to this cause will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for taking the time to read our JustGiving page, from the Supertrisors!!- Katie, Lauren & Molly :)
