Story
The first Everest in the Alps event was in March 2015, Rob, along with a team of 13 others, undertook an extreme alpine challenge, Everest in the Alps. The team ascended 8,848 metres - equivalent to the height of the world's largest mountain - on skis, raising an incredible £3m for The Brain Tumour Charity.
Rob was inspired to undertake this challenge for his son Toby, who was diagnosed with a low grade brain tumour at the age of five. Despite surgery and gruelling chemotherapy, the position of the tumour on Toby's brain stem means that it cannot be fully removed.
Everest In The Alps 2015 was a challenge that enabled The Brain Tumour Charity to invest £5m in to The Everest Centre for Research into Paediatric Low Grade Brain Tumours, the largest single investment globally in to low grade paediatric brain tumours. It brings together an international, multi-disciplinary team of leading experts, collaborating across Europe and the USA.
At the end of February 2024, Martin and his friends will follow in Rob's giant footsteps to hopefully raise further funds for The Everest Centre. Our son Alex was diagnosed with Diffuse Leptomeningeal Glioneuronal Tumours (DLGNT) in 2021 at the age of 20.
DLGNT is categorised as a paediatric cancer and, as Alex's tumours line the entire brain and spine, they cannot be removed with surgery. It took a year and three biopsies to diagnose his condition and a team of international neuro-oncologists to determine the best course of targeted treatment. There is no cure and no standard of care for DLGNT and by raising money for research into this cruel disease, we hope to change this.
