Story
Why are 2 old women doing a triathlon for Men’s health?? Why not breast cancer or a more female focussed cause? Well here is why...
The single largest killer of men under 50 is suicide. Yes you read that correctly.
There were over 7,000 suicides in the UK last year and over 75% of those were men.
A man dies from suicide every hour and a half, every day, 365 days a year.
And it’s getting worse. Every year.
The Samaritans now take a call for help every 10 seconds.
Obviously it’s truly tragic for the men it affects but we forget how overwhelmingly devastating it is also for the wives, daughters, sisters & mothers etc they leave behind. Suicide affects us all. It’s not just a “man’s issue”.
That’s why.
Suicide is preventable not inevitable.
This year we lost a dear family friend, Andy Freeman, in these saddest of circumstances. His wife Karen and children Jessica and Joseph have since come across Andys Man Club, an existing charity aiming to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health and create a judgment-free, confidential space where men can be open about the storms in their lives. They aim to achieve this through weekly, free-to-attend peer-to-peer support groups. The name of the charity and what it aims to achieve could not be more relevant and appropriate so we would love to be able to raise enough money over time to hold a local support group in Nottingham that can help men struggling with mental Health as Andy’s legacy.
Please support us on 29th September as we swim 16 lengths, cycle 22km and then run 5km to try and raise as much money as possible for this amazing charity, no donation is too small, and maybe, just maybe we can help reduce the number of people struggling to cope and those it seriously affects.
All our love, Katie & Tanya xx
