Harley’s Helpers is our small effort to honor Kathy’s infinite love of animals in need.
While working at Freedom Woods Equestrian Center, a police officer dropped off a stray female pit bull that was found abused, malnourished and scared. The officer thought the barn could possibly take the dog in as a rescue dog because she was sure to be put down otherwise.
Well, it was love at first sight. Kathy adopted her and named her Harley. For over a decade the two were inseparable. Whether walking at Lane Tech in the snow or chasing deer in the forest preserves, the two seemed to always be on an endless adventure. Even walks around the neighborhood occasionally called for a search party.
After Harley’s passing in June 2017, Kathy spent her time feeding geese and deer in the forest preserves and occasionally volunteering at the local animal shelter to walk dogs. She most recently enjoyed supporting Chicago Canine Rescue, a non-profit organization providing a no-kill shelter for dogs on Chicago’s north side. This fund will contribute monthly to supporting this amazing non-profit.
