Story
This summer Kath is taking part in Race to the Stones (100km ultramarathon) to raise money for 180 children in Hestia's domestic abuse refuges to take part in summer activities.
Why we are fundraising
Domestic abuse can cause significant harm to children’s physical and neurological development, as well as their emotional wellbeing, their school life and their relationships. With the right support however, children can recover from their experiences of even the most severe abuse. It does not need to define their future life chances. The stay in a refuge is an important window of opportunity to engage children with high levels of need alongside their mums in an environment where they feel safe.
How your support will help children in crisis
The funds raised will provide a programme of activities during the 6-week school summer holidays. From cake decorating classes in the refuge to trips to attractions, these invaluable memories are a key part of the mothers' and children's development and healing journeys. This is often the first time they have been able to take their children on trips like visiting the zoo or beach. Wellbeing activities like these are a key part of children’s recovery; it brings families closer together and helps mums feel more confident in their parenting.
£15 could provide the materials for a baking activity in the refuge, a small but meaningful activity to help a child unwind after a therapy session.
£50 could pay for a mum and a child to have a day out a local farm or zoo, helping them to get to know their local community.
£300 could pay for a summer BBQ at the refuge, giving all the mums and children a chance to connect with each other, socialise and relax.
