Story

I am absolutely terrified of heights so the challenge of doing an abseil is something I would never have even entertained! However, when I see how brave my Superhero son Alex is every single day then I can hardly refuse his challenge to abseil from the top of Anfield's Main Stand!!!

Alex wasn't breathing when he was born and so suffered from HIE (Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy, or oxygen starvation to you and me) which caused quadriplegic dystonic cerebral palsy (Grade 5 which is the worst), epilepsy, learning difficulties & severe scoliosis. We were warned by the Doctors that it would be very unlikely that he’d ever talk, eat, sit or walk and that there was no cure.

But when he was 2 years old, we found Rainbow Hub and a therapy called Conductive Education and life became much brighter! With their help, he has achieved much more than he was ever supposed to. He's learnt to hold his head up (you wouldn’t believe just how heavy your head is when working against gravity & scoliosis!); to sit briefly on his own; and to take a few steps with help – things everyone takes for granted but are so hard when your body & muscles won’t do as they’re told. He's currently doing really well at learning to communicate by different means as he still only has a couple of words .... mainly No!!! (like a true teenager)

Over the last 15/16 years, Alex has raised an amazing amount of money for Rainbow Hub to help them support him and his friends. So this year, he has challenged me to do something that he would absolutely love to do but unfortunately can't anymore. When he was much younger he loved hanging out of trees etc (pictures above!) which is how he became #ActionmanAlex.....so I hope to be able to follow in his shoes.

Please dig deep and support us so that Rainbow Hub can continue to support both Alex and us as a family.

Your Gift really will last Alex, his friends and their families a lifetime

Thank you,

Karen - the very proud Mum of Alex Mac BCyA!
