Story
Two years ago, my youngest brother David lost his life to suicide. As is so often the case, it was completely unexpected - he had lots of friends, a loving close-knit family and was in uni studying to be a doctor. He never spoke about any mental health struggles and I never saw him without a smile on his face.
After he died I felt so guilty - why didn’t I see him more often? Could I ‘claim’ the grief if I wasn’t as close to him as my other brothers were? I started bargaining with different scenarios. Would it have happened if our Dad hadn’t died when he was 10? We grew up in different households, with a 13 year age gap, but I realise now that doesn’t change how much I loved him.
I’ll never know what Dave was going through under the surface but I’m certain that no 21 year old should see suicide as the only solution.
That’s why I’m walking (at least) 90 miles in June to raise money for Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM). They are a suicide prevention charity who have lots of tools and resources to help people find the support they need, including a life-saving helpline for people who can’t see a way forward, have lost someone to suicide, or are worried about their friends or loved ones.
£12.20 is enough to fund one potentially life-saving call.
Any donation, no matter how small, would be so appreciated - and if money is tight, a share would go a long way, if not only to raise awareness. For Baby Dave 🧡
