As a young leader in the Campus Y, I have seen firsthand the impact that Campus Y has on the community. I love being surrounded by my peers who are just as passionate about community engagement. Having the support from others makes our jobs as Campus Y leaders much easier and allows for more efficient programing that better helps the community.
My first time being a leader for Campus Y was challenging and scary, but very exciting. There are a lot of obstacles that a person may face, but one of the amazing things about Campus Y is that there is always someone to support you. My biggest advice is to not get lost in the details and always remember the overall goal and why you're doing what you're doing. Always do something because you are passionate about it and because you will think it will help others.
In high school, I was an art teacher and it was one of the most rewarding experiences. When I came to college, I hoped to do something similar. I joined Campus Y initially as a Science Olympiad volunteer where I helped coach Wydown Middle School's SciOly team. When I applied for the PL position for that program, I was offered the opportunity to restart the inactive "Arts and Kids" program based on my previous experience. I was super excited to not only get more involved in the Y, but also to be able to participate in an activity that I hoped to do when I entered college. The journey of seeing the program come to life- from planning the craft ideas to actually going to Maplewood Richmond Heights elementary school- has been extremely rewarding not only for the kiddos, but for me as well. Seeing my own ideas being implemented in my local community has opened my eyes to the possibilities that the Campus Y provides.
