Story

Every day, one Nova Scotian dies from a disease that is 90% preventable: colorectal cancer.

I am a survivor. In September of last year, I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Fortunately, it was detected early because I did the at-home FIT test, followed by an exploratory colonoscopy which confirmed stage one colon cancer. In November, I had surgery to remove a section of my bowel and am currently living with a temporary ileostomy. The GREAT news is that I am now cancer free!

I am extremely grateful: for the FIT test that alerted the right people, for the prompt appointment for a colonoscopy, for my exceptional surgeon, Dr. Riley Stewart, and his team and for the care I received post-surgery at the Dartmouth General Hospital.

This experience was a challenge no one wants to face and it's one that not everyone wins. I am thankful I am able to participate in the GUT initiative by raising funds and climbing a different kind of mountain for my health.

The GUT (Get Up There) initiative, which is marking its 17th anniversary this year is dedicated to raising funds and awareness for colorectal cancer screening and prevention. The funds raised will help purchase state-of-the-art equipment and technology for colorectal cancer screening and outfit a third Endoscopy Suite at Dartmouth General Hospital, used exclusively for screening FIT-positive (Fecal Immunochemical Test) patients, effectively eliminating the waiting list for these individuals.

Last year's GUT campaign supported a public awareness effort aimed at encouraging more individuals to complete and return their FIT tests. Currently, only 40% of individuals who receive the kit complete and return it. Funds raised this year will continue to focus on improving FIT return rates across Nova Scotia. Together, let's make a difference!
