Story
On Saturday 7th September, Josh, Chloe, Robin and Nyasha are going to Race The Sun!
We’ll cycle 40 miles through the hills of the Lake District, hike 10.5 miles to the top of mount Skiddaw (a whopping 931 metres tall), and kayak 2 miles around lake Derwenter (hopefully managing to go in a straight line, rather than in circles!).
We will have one objective – finish before the sun sets. And given the distances we must cover, it will be a challenge.
Why do you need us, you say?
We need you, because we're doing it to raise money for Action Medical Research - a British medical research charity that helps prevent and treat disease and disability in babies and children.
But why should we pay you to go on a boat in the Lake District?
Touché, admittedly we're doing the boat thing because we want to. But we are also aiming to get people's attention, in order to remind them that medical research saves lives, and that there are charities desperately looking for money to develop new lifesaving technologies and ideas.
Action Medical Research helped discover the importance of folic acid to prevent spina bifida in babies, developed the use of ultrasound in pregnancy, tested the rubella vaccine, and is developing advice in relation to sleep positions to reduce the likelihood of stillbirths.
And why does that matter?
Because, as we have tragically directly experienced, illness and death in babies and children is devastating, and where it is preventable - it should be prevented.
The impact of the contributions Action Medical Research has made is immeasurable, and it’s essential that they be able to continue their work – who knows what breakthroughs are around the corner.
Your donation will make a massive difference - both to the cause and to us as we push ourselves up the hills - so please sponsor us as generously as you are able to help make every mile we cover worthwhile!
