Umoja FM is a lifeline for us - Mulema, Umoja FM listener, North Kivu
Mulema's is just one of many stories I heard last week during my visit to the troubled province of North Kivu in the DRC. Others spoke of how this little radio station, Umoja FM, has helped with their health and education and even changed their attitudes about educating their girl children.
Amplifying Voices helped set up Umoja FM in 2016 in this conflict-affected region. Since then, it has been a constant voice of hope through war, the ebola crisis, the refugee crisis and the pandemic.
But the station is in dire need of assistance.
We have been asked to help extend the reach of the station to communities who have no access to reliable information. The station building also needs replacing - after 15 years, the weather, termites and war have put the mud and wood building at risk of collapse.
The needs are vast and the challenges many, but we are compelled to do what we can to support their work, so they may continue amplifying the voices of their own communities, to be heard, empowered and promoting peace and reconciliation across their whole region.
Will you help us?
