Story
Prostate Cancer is the commonest form of cancer in men. In the UK, 12000 men a year die from it. When caught at an early stage it can be cured, but most of the treatments we use can have troublesome side effects.
High intensity focussed ultrasound (HIFU) is a minimally invasive treatment that can be used in many men with prostate cancer as an alternative to more major surgery or radiotherapy. It has fewer side effects and patients recover quickly. Currently in the UK, only a handful of hospitals offer HIFU therapy, making access to it difficult or impossible for many men.
Prost8 is a charity which aims to widen access to minimally invasive treatments for prostate cancer for men across the UK. Having recently developed a HIFU service in Bath with their support we are keen to help them, so a team from the Royal United Hospital will be running the London Landmarks Half Marathon to raise money for Prost8.
Working with people diagnosed with prostate cancer means we are all aware of the challenges it presents to our patients. Prost8 and the Urology unit at the RUH are passionately focused on providing many more men with earlier screening, better treatments and a much better life after treatment.
