Story
On June 9th, my family, lead by our dog Charlie, will be doing a 10K walk in support of the WHEN PIGS FLY radiothon for Qwalayu House happening in Campbell River on June 15th.
To give some background, Qwalayu House is an amazing home in Campbell River where families can stay while their children receive health care in the area and is also available for pregnant individuals from remote communities who can stay close to the hospital as their due date approaches. Qwalayu House receives no government funding and relies 100% on donations to continue to provide this critical home for families.
Before Qwalayu House existed, people with high-risk pregnancies in remote communities that needed to be close to the Campbell River Hospital in their third trimester, had little to no affordable options for long term stays in the area. This meant they would travel from their remote communities, often alone without their families, and were sleeping in their cars or tents as they awaited the arrival of their little one.
Can you imagine living out of a tent or car, alone in your THIRD TRIMESTER!
Luckily Children's Health Foundation of Vancouver Island opened Qwalayu House in 2021 and has since welcomed 243 family stays and 96 babies have been born to families staying in the house. If you want to read more about the incredible impact of the house for families you can read this article in the Campbell River Mirror.
I'd love your support to make sure that all Island families that need to travel to Campbell River for healthcare continue to have a safe place to call home.
