Story
Inspired by my colleague, Chris Wilson who survived cancer last year and his drive to give back to the charities that supported him, 30 of us from work will be taking on the London Marathon MyWay 2024 event, on 21st April (in association with and on the same day as the London Marathon), across the country. Macmillan were also a great support to my Mum, when she was going through her treatment many years ago.
The last time I walked/ran anything near that distance was doing the christian aid walk at school! I am not a runner or particularly a walker and have never had the urge to complete a marathon distance, (although the French one via the vineyards does have some appeal but I know I would get waylaid)! So volunteering to do this was a surprise to me! However, I'm incredibly pleased I have.
I will be walking the distance and am following a training plan which has been a challenge in itself for me.
Doing the MyWay marathon in your local town means there we aren’t doing this with volunteers or crowds to provide that much needed boost of motivation, however, I am determined to complete it.
The story of cancer is changing. The UK population is ageing. As the risk of developing cancer increases with age, cancer incidence will increase. Research suggests that 1 in 2 people born in the UK after 1960 will receive a cancer diagnosis. Improvements in treatment and diagnosis are now allowing people to live longer after their diagnosis.
Thanks for supporting my fundraising. Macmillan gives people with cancer everything they’ve got. If you’re diagnosed, your worries are Macmillan’s worries. Macmillan’s doing whatever it takes. But without your help, Macmillan can’t support everyone who needs them.
