Story
Back in 2022 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a huge shock, as I thought I was fit & healthy. I ate very well, looked after myself and ran/worked out most days ... cancer didn't happen to people like me!
I was very lucky to catch it early, and now nearly two years after diagnosis, with all my treatment behind me, I am finally able to run the London Marathon again (after having to defer my entry twice due to surgery). It will not be pretty, and certainly no sub 4 run for me this time. I just want to finish and raise as much money as I can for the Salisbury District Hospital Breast Unit.
The nurses and consultants were incredible throughout my journey, from diagnosis until my treatment finished. In fact they are still at the end of the phone and help with any ongoing issues or worries. It felt as though they had my back and were looking after me throughout and I felt very lucky to have such an amazing team to fall back on.
The Stars Appeal Breast Unit is the first ever dedicated unit for breast patients at Salisbury District Hospital. The Breast Unit provides the best possible facilities with dedicated diagnostic equipment, treatment and counselling rooms enabling highly efficient care. Both diagnosis and follow up are delivered in one place, reducing the need for patients to visit other departments in the hospital. Thanks to the space and availability of state-of-the-art equipment, patients attending for tests to see if they have breast cancer often receive their diagnosis on the same day, avoiding anxious waits for results and more frequent hospital visits.”
