A yacht race from Cape Town, South Africa to Freemantle, Australia, leg 3 of the Round The World Clipper race.
Two years ago, from the comfort of my home, taking part in a round the world yacht race with 10 other competing 70 foot yachts seemed like a terrific idea. Anybody who knows me knows I love a challenge. As the race now looms closer, I’m not so sure. Scheduled to leave Cape Town South Africa on Thursday 16th November this year, we will head south towards the Southern Ocean, and the latitudes known as the Roaring Forties. The name is well earnt: relentless low pressure weather systems following back to back one on top of another, three storey high waves, frequently gale force winds, boat speeds exceeding 30 knots. I hope it will be as fun as I anticipate, I shalln’t be able to get off the boat for four weeks! Click on the link, scroll down and watch the video:

As a Doctor who has enjoyed a career helping children, I am delighted that my boat for the round world Clipper race will be Team UNICEF. UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, works to build a better world for every child, everywhere. UNICEF provides more children with clean water, life-saving therapeutic food and vaccines, education and protection from violence than any other humanitarian organisation. UNICEF was established by the UN 70 years ago, it has a network that spans the globe, working in some of the world’s toughest places, reaching the furthest from help, the most disadvantaged and the most at risk. UNICEF saves children’s lives with vaccines, clean water and therapeutic food. UNICEF protects children from violence, exploitation and abuse. And UNICEF helps children fulfil their potential, by supporting quality education and training. UNICEF works for every child, to build a better world for everyone.
The laser Dermatology company, SK;N I have worked with for 25 years have generously supported me, and I am hoping with the further support of friends and colleagues I will be able to raise further funds for UNICEF. SK;N have agreed to match all donations made up to £500, so please be kind enough to donate so that we can double that amount from SK;N by match funding up to £1000.
It is 5,392 miles from Cape Town to Fremantle. I will be wet, cold, sleep deprived, very likely battered and bruised; maybe sometimes grumpy and sometimes exhilarated. I am setting a target of half the distance in miles, so £2696 is my fundraising goal.
Every donation will help to build a better world for every child, every day, everywhere.
