The Lilongwe Institute of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery (LION) is an autonomous not-for-profit institution in Malawi where BSSH and BAHT aim to work with and train local surgeons, trainees and therapists to deliver and educate in patient care.

Story

The vision of the BSSH BAHT LION Project is to use our resource to deliver maximum possible benefit for patients in need of hand surgery in Malawi through the development and co-ordination of sustainable educational and surgical training.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, and the LION project provides a unique opportunity to provide training to Malawian surgeons and therapists so that they may become independent surgeons and trainers in the future and the LION unit becomes completely self sustaining.

Jeremy and Debs will be part of this amazing project for 6 weeks in April/May 2025, Jeremy volunteering as a hand surgeon and Debs as a hand therapist.
