Story
All Saints Church, Gazeley is quite unique and in desperate need of support. The chancel roof is is need of replacement as it is leaking onto the unique 15th Carvings beneath it.
The age of the carvings has been dated as approximately 1520, by the style of the clothing depicted in some of them.
These carvings are extremely rare, some are possibly unique, and depict ordinary people, animals and mythical creatures. The leaking roof threatens these invaluable carvings.
The importance of the roof has been highlighted leading academics. Professor Julian Luxford of the University of St Andrews wrote of the carvings:
“The sculpted roof bosses of Gazeley parish church are an artistic treasure of national significance. Unknown until recently, they offer a unique insight into the visual imagination of late medieval England… The Gazeley sculptures, which owe their survival to date to a combination of good fortune and the fact of being out of the reach of would-be despoilers, are fragile and precious. Their preservation should be a matter of concern to anyone……..”
The annual sponsored Ride & Stride raises money to enable the charity to make grants to churches and chapels of all denominations towards repair and restoration costs. 50% of the money raised by sponsors goes to the church/chapel of their choice which will be All Saints Church Gazeley, our beautiful Grade 1 listed church, as it is in urgent need of a new roof, (and the other 50% to the SHCT).
Mike and I are cycling through Suffolk to try and visit as many churches as possible in aid of this cause
