Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Around a year ago, I had a routine health check following which it eventually became clear that I had a rare blood cancer called Myelofibrosis.
The only chance of a cure is a Stem Cell transplant and my doctors are searching the donor registry for a suitable donor.
In the meantime I have been working with DKMS who are an amazing charity with an incredible team of wonderful individuals who are working extremely hard to increase the number of stem cell donors.
New stem cell donors are needed to give many people in the UK and across the world a second chance at life.
DKMS is the biggest stem cell register in the UK, and has registered over 950,000 blood stem cell donors since 2013 and helped to give over 2,000 people a second chance at life.
Over 2,000 people each year in the UK are in need of a blood stem cell transplant, however, just 3% of the UK’s population are registered as potential donors. Across the world, these numbers are multiplied.
Only a tiny proportion of these potential donors are from minority ethnic communities and that is a key focus for the charity.
The more people who register as blood stem cell donors, the better the chance for someone in need of a blood stem cell transplant. To date, worldwide, DKMS has registered over 11 million potential blood stem cell donors, and over 100,000 second chances at life have been provided by DKMS.
This is a cause very dear to my heart and I’d be very grateful if you could donate whatever you can.
Thanks
James
