In September 2024, ForRangers Ultra participants took on the challenge of making their way across 230 km of Kenyan trails. They are raising funds to improve rangers' lives and boost rhino conservation.

Story

We will be running 230km over 5 days across the Kenyan savannah, fundraising for the charity For Rangers and Save the Rhino International supporting anti-poaching & wildlife conservation.

James & I are no strangers to ultramarathons … usually I am the race doctor & James running competitively. But this race is different for us both. I am switching sides from race medic to runner for the first time for my first multi-day ultramarathon & undoubtedly my biggest running challenge yet!! I first volunteered as a medic on this race in 2019 & on subsequent years. I was captivated by the vast wilderness, incredible wildlife & the fearless rangers who put their lives on the line every day to protect endangered wildlife.

James & I will be taking on this exciting ultramarathon challenge together, running as a team across 230km (143 miles) of Kenyan savannah over 5 days. We are privileged to take part in a race route which passes through 4 different wildlife conservancies, through the heart of rhino conservation from Lewa Wildlife Conservancy through the foothills of Mt Kenya to Borana and Ol Jogi Conservancies and the undulating plains of Ol Pejeta Conservancy on the Equator. Temperatures are usually around 30 degrees & we will be self-sufficient throughout, carrying all our kit for the 5 days.  We will be treading paths normally only travelled by the wildlife, the rangers and the poachers who threaten them.  There are no fences in this Kenyan wilderness - we will be amongst the African wildlife day & night! We will be under the careful watch of the armed rangers themselves with the ever-present risk of running into lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos & buffalo to name a few!

All race entrants have made a donation to ForRangers via the entry fee for this not-for-profit race but we would like to raise additional funds to support the amazing work of both charities.

Here’s some information about the charities:

ForRangers is a dedicated anti-poaching charity committed to protecting Africa's precious wildlife and supporting the rangers who work tirelessly on the frontlines of conservation in Africa.  In this beautiful place a war is being fought. A war between armed and organised poaching cartels and the rangers. The rangers are the thin wall separating Africa’s last remaining elephants and rhinos from a multibillion-dollar trade in wildlife goods.

ForRangers supports the brave men and women who protect endangered wildlife.  It is a dangerous and difficult task.  Many face a threat to their lives and livelihood: 1,000 rangers have lost their lives since 2003, protecting what is left of Africa's wildlife heritage. Many more have been injured in the line of duty.

ForRangers steps forward to support the rangers.  The funds raised go directly to these men and women on the front-line risking their lives on a daily basis, providing them with good quality equipment, accommodation, improved welfare, health & life insurance, training and better working conditions.

What could your fundraising support?

£16,500 | $20,000 pays for a fully equipped canteen so rangers can eat nutritious meals together.

£14,000 | $17,000 pays for a new ranger security base to improve their reach and response times.

£3,200 | $3,800 could provide a new patrol camp to give rangers safe locations to rest.

£180 | $218 could provide a three-person tent to provide cover from the elements during the night.

£82 | $100 will buy a smartphone so rangers can communicate and capture data in the field.

£38 | $46 buys a portable stove so rangers can cook a hot meal in the bush.

£35 | $43 covers life insurance for one ranger for a full year.

£17 | $20 pays for a life-saving first aid kit.
