Story
My cousin lost her husband last month to suicide. Rory was 30 years old, healthy, he was a great person, honestly the nicest fella you could meet and yet he took his own life.
I saw the promotion for this run. 60 miles in September, and for me, someone who used to play sports and exercise a lot it was something I wanted to achieve for me personally and also to raise awareness for suicide and money if possible for Pieta. I know no matter how hard I will find it I can do it, and I can get through it.
I want to be clear and blunt about why I am doing this. Yes I am doing this because of Rory, but Im not doing it for him. I'm doing this so that those who can read this and those that are close to me like friends and family can understand that life is tough but no matter what, we can come out of it better. Young men should not be killing themselves. There is ALWAYS someone who you can talk to, and for me, I want those who are close to me or those who are not know that I am always there to share a chat.
We need to be more comfortable being uncomfortable so that we speak out when we need to, or be more comfortable asking our friends how they are.
If you need to reach out do. Whether that's your family, friends, partner or even me I don't care. Someone will listen, someone cares and that's all that matters.
