Story

Hi!

I'm James, a kidney transplant patient and this year I'm raising money for St.Georges Hospital Charity by attempting this May to become the first-ever transplant patient in the world to ski and traverse Greenland under human power alone.

I'm attempting this world first because my Mum and Grandma both passed away from the same genetic kidney condition I suffer from and the only reason I'm able to attempt the expedition is because amazing NHS staff transplanted one of my sister's kidneys into me when I was 21. She was only 18 and the youngest ever kidney donor at the hospital.

After everyone donated so generously to my past charity race across India, circumnavigation of Sri Lanka and recent crossing of Svalbard last year (you can see pictures in my gallery) helping me raise over £4000 for NHS and other charities, I'm heading back to the Arctic and aiming to raise at least £2000 this time for the hospital and NHS which has done so much for me, my family and countless others.

You can find out more about the expedition HERE or follow my progress via Instagram HERE.

Over 30/35 days (depending on storm delays) I will be skiing from the west to east coast camping on the world's largest island in temperatures ranging from 2 and -30 degrees c. Skiing on average 14 miles per day, I will haul all my food and equipment (weighing around 80kg) in a pulk (sledge) in high winds, storms, rain, snow and hopefully some blue skies! There will be Polar Bears watching on too...

I'm training 5/6 days a week for what is a pretty daunting personal challenge but I can't wait to begin this expedition and once again with your help, raise vital funds and awareness for a hospital that saved my life.

All donations will go to the renal (kidney) department as they raise final funds towards the building of the first dedicated renal department at the hospital. Unbelievably, this truly amazing department which has saved so many lives has had to work out of prefabricated temporary "cabins" for over 20 years and after years of hard work fighting for a proper building, it's about time this department had an actual building to work from!

I've chosen to take on such a tough expedition and world-first to not only raise as much money as I can but to also raise as much awareness about this hospital, chronic organ donation shortages, and to push my boundaries and the boundaries and perceptions of what organ transplant patients can achieve.

The NHS continues to be on its knees and needs our help more than ever. The tireless staff at St.Georges saved my life when I received my kidney transplant from my sister back in 2007 and the staff at BRI Hospital in Bradford, West Yorkshire fought very hard to try and keep my mum alive while seriously ill with kidney failure.

This expedition is in memory of my amazing mum and any donation you can make will be greatly appreciated and will go towards a very worthy cause.

Thank you!!
