Story
Ewan was my best friend since we were 11 years old, meeting at school. From a childhood filled with video games, football, cricket, and alarmingly frequent takeaways, we ended up living together when he decided to do a masters at St Andrews. The Masters turned into PhDs, and one year as flatmates turned into four wonderful years filled with cherished memories.
As part of his PhD, Ewan researched the ways in which popular artworks (including novels, films, and television series) could provide innovative emotional, psychological, and spiritual care for cancer patients. His thesis can be accessed here: https://research-repository.st-andrews.ac.uk/handle/10023/26686 Alongside this, Ewan was an ambassador for Maggie’s, devoting a great amount of time to raising its profile, as well as fundraising for the charity. A testament to his efforts is his last fundraiser in September 2022 where, having just completed radiotherapy, he ran the Great North Run (21km) in under two hours. Sadly, Ewan died on 23 December 2022 from cancer, aged 27.
In his memory, I am continuing to raise money for this great organisation. Last year, I organised the inaugural “March for Maggie’s”, a team steps challenge where 14 people walked just over 4 million steps in March to raise money for Maggie’s. Maggie’s is an organisation that offers free palliative care for cancer patients and their loved ones, providing workshops, courses, one-to-one counselling, and group sessions.
This year, 18 people are aiming to reach 7 million steps by the end of March. I, along with all the participants in the challenge, would greatly appreciate any donations to this great organisation, if you are able to do so. Please share this page with anyone who may be interested.
Thank you.
