Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Our names are Jake and Logan and our mum is helping us write this so you know what we're doing and why we need your help!
Dad's Story:
Our dad, Luke, has leukaemia which is a type of blood cancer that affects blood cells in his bone marrow.
He was first diagnosed at age 13. After a couple of years of receiving blood and platelet transfusions, intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy, a stem cell transplant and finally a bone marrow transplant (from uncle Jamie), dad was in remission.
He went on to meet and marry mum and then they were blessed with having us and a labradoodle called Bella.
Sadly, (some 17 years later from being in remission) in November 2023 dad was admitted to hospital with pneumonia and his blood tests showed that his leukaemia was back.
Dad had one round of intensive chemotherapy but unfortunately it didn't affect the leukaemia cells. Dad has weakened heart muscles from previous treatment so he only had one shot at the chemotherapy and radiotherapy is not an option.
He's again had several blood and platelet transfusions and is now on his second round of a new drug which targets the type of mutation dad has in the leukaemia cells. This is reducing the amount of leukaemia cells and once it gets to zero, dad would need to have another bone marrow transplant.
Facts about Leukaemia:
- In the UK, 27 new patients are diagnosed with leukaemia every day – that’s 10,000 every year.
- Despite progress, only half of leukaemia patients live longer than five years after their diagnosis.
- Leukaemia is the most common type of cancer in children (over 30% of all cancers in the under 14s are leukaemia).
What we want to do:
We want to raise money for Leukaemia UK to help fund research which is urgently needed to develop kinder and more effective treatments for this horrendous disease.
We also want to raise awareness about leukaemia because it's often hard to spot and people are diagnosed late, impacting their chances of survival. The most common symptoms are fatigue, repeat infections, pain in bones/joints and shortness of breath. These symptoms are often missed.
Leukaemia UK's mission is to find and fund life-changing research to stop leukaemia devastating lives. Without this type of action, new medicines like the one dad is currently having, wouldn't be available.
So, cutting a long story short, we're going to strap on our running shoes and run 100k between us throughout March 2024 for our dad - because he is the most amazing dad, husband, son, brother and uncle and we all want him to get better as soon as possible!
We'll upload videos on to our YouTube channel so that you can track our progress throughout the month. Please see https://www.youtube.com/@TheCroKids
