As two university friends and big petrol-heads, we will live out our Top Gear fantasy this January, by driving from Luton, England, to Banjul, The Gambia, as part of a lifelong dream to raise money for charity.

During the challenge, we will drive through France, Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania and Senegal before arriving in Banjul, where our trusty 18 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee, will be auctioned off for charity. The proceeds to be donated to the Rotary Club in The Gambia, who support a number of local charities.

The journey is mapped out by the ‘Dakar Challenge’, an organisation that facilitates un-aided charity rallies through Northern Africa, however, no mechanical assistance will be provided. We will be ultimately responsible for planning our route, organising our accommodation and going head on with any challenges we may face. We anticipate the trip to take 3 weeks, covering around 4,000 miles, traversing mountains, beaches, a desert minefield in Western Sahara, dust, dust and more dust!

As well as auctioning off our car at the end (not sure how much we will get for it by then!), we want to raise money for Legs4Africa, a charity that recycles prosthetic limbs, so that amputees in sub-Saharan Africa can live more independent lives.
