On 3rd February 2023 our world came crashing down around us when we found out our baby's heart had stopped beating at 27 weeks. On 6th February, our beautiful little girl Millie, was born sleeping. We spent a whole day and night with her before having to say our goodbyes. Walking out of the hospital and leaving her behind was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Before this happened to me, I could never have imagined what baby loss felt like. You are grieving a person you love and have been growing, but one that you have never actually known or been able to spend time with. Instead of walking down to a maternity ward full of crying babies you are being led down to a silent bereavement maternity ward to deliver a baby that you know you won't be taking home with you. Instead of walking out of the hospital filled with joy and a baby carrier, you are walking out the hospital empy handed apart from a box of keepsakes and memories. You are always thinking of what could have been, knowing that a precious little life will not get the chance to grow up alongside you.
Charities like Tommy's are so important, and I am honest and open with people when I say, I didn't know quite how important until it affected me personally. Before experiencing baby loss first hand we had very little knowledge of stillbirth or neonatal loss and it fills me with sadness at how many people are going through this daily. 8 babies a day are stillborn, which is 1 in every 250 pregnancies.
I will be running the London Marathon for Millie and all the babies taken too early, whilst raising money for this most worthwhile cause. The more research that can be done, the better chance of reducing these numbers and preventing families from experiencing the devastating and life changing events of baby loss through stillbirth, miscarriage and premature birth.
