Help improve diagnosis for the 10,000 people living with PSP & CBD in the UK. Set up and host a Walk for Hope during summer 2024 to mark PSPA’s 30th Anniversary. Our Walk for Hope is an amazing fundraising and awareness opportunity.

Story

PSPA is a national charity providing support and information to people living with PSP and CBD, while funding research into treatments and ultimately a cure. They aim to improve the lives of everyone affected by PSP and CBD and rely entirely on voluntary donations.

I'm raising money for PSPA - PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) - as my mum suffered from this very rare brain condition for around 2-3 years before she sadly died in January 2023. I'm fundraising in order for PSPA to have the funds to be able to spread awareness further as there is not a lot of information and many healthcare professionals don't know a lot about it.

PSP affects eating and drinking and swallowing, mobility including muscle stiffness and pain, communication and speech, cognition and memory, bowel and urinary problems too. It's such a heartbreaking condition to watch a loved one go through.

Mum was unable to use a frame due to leaning forward part of the condition and their being a risk of falling. So we use to hold her hands and guide her to walk that way she felt more supported.

Mum used to hold food / drink in her mouth for up to 30minutes sometimes longer as she was unable to swallow (brain not sending the correct signals to the body)

Mum used to walk slowly holding onto furniture or reaching for furniture thinking it was closer than it was which resulted in more falls.

Mum was unable to communicate towards the end - Mum was deaf, she could only put her thumb up to communicate. Mum would also close her eyes (part of condition) and getting her to open them to ask her a question was difficult.

Mum use to straighten her legs and arms outwards as her muscles become stiff as the symptoms of PSP progressed.

Mum would become confused and become forgetful such as going to the shop and forget to take her purse with her, forget to eat / drink and take her medication.

I will be doing 10,000 steps daily throughout August anything over that is a bonus. I'll be grateful for all donations towards PSPA in memory of my beautiful Mum.

I'm now on my last week I've loved every moment even though it's been difficult at times.

Thank you for taking the time to read.
