Story
On 13th October 2024 I will be running the Manchester Half Marathon in aid of Manchester Women’s Aid.
My close friends know that running is not really my thing to the point that following a round of pupillage applications I have my very own t-shirt that says ‘If you see me running you probably should to’. So, this year I have decided to change my mindset and go outside of my comfort zone whilst also raising money for a very good cause.
Manchester Women’s Aid is marking its 50th anniversary with a year that will seek to make a difference to the lives of the children that it supports in its refuges and within the community. It wants to give these children reasons to smile and to bring them moments of joy. In the last 50 years, Manchester Women's Aid's work has touched the lives of over 30,000 adults and children living across Greater Manchester and 53% of our clients are parents.
The children’s perspective doesn’t always get the same focus as that of adults, but in fact children make up the greatest number of those living temporarily in their refuges. It is estimated that over 800,000 children are affected by domestic abuse.
The statistics are staggering with two women killed by a partner or ex-partner every week in England and Wales. Domestic abuse is not just confined to violence or sexual abuse but can involve emotional abuse, coercive control, stalking, economic abuse, digital abuse, and many other forms of abuse which can overlap.
Manchester Women’s Aid, part of The Pankhurst Trust, exists to offer clients the confidential help they need and to provide a holistic, safety-first approach, where the prospect of a life free from abuse is possible.
I understand that the current climate does not mean that everyone is able to donate so I would be very grateful for this page to be shared or you can access the Manchester Women’s Aid website to educate yourselves and your loved ones on what domestic abuse is and how you can support those who are affected:
