Story
Hello!
We are Archie, Isabel (Archie’s carer and friend) and Dan (Archie’s dad) and we will be taking part in the Superhero Tri together. This is the first time Archie will be taking part in a large event (and a triathlon!) so it will be an exciting day for us!
Archie is 15 years old, he is autistic, non-verbal and has a learning disability. He requires support in nearly all aspects in his day to day life. He can find certain situations challenging and overwhelming, especially as he finds it hard to communicate. Archie, myself and Dan are taking part in the superhero tri to show that people with complex disabilities can do things anyone else can, they just need support and adjustments to do them.
I (Isabel) have been Archie’s carer for just over 2 years. I am a huge advocate for intensive interaction, which formed the basis of our relationship. Arch loves going on trips out together - he especially enjoys swimming, boat trips, going to the cinema, Go Ape, companion cycling at Bushy park and inflatables (and McDonalds chips!).
Archie has been attending White Lodge Play and Youth Clubs since he was little and now attends the 13-18s Youth Club at the weekends and during the holidays. There are lots of things that he loves to do at White Lodge, that keeps him stimulated and active. He uses the hydro pool, takes part in cooking and sensory activities, spends time with his school friends and goes trips such as forest school. White Lodge enables Archie to have access to a variety of activities and also for his family to have some respite (and also for Archie to have a break from them!)
