Story
On December 8th 2022, Filip (aged 13) had a horrific sledging accident at Deeside Golf Club. He was rushed by the ambulance to the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital (RACH) where the major trauma team was assembled to meet him. Filip had broken his back and his sternum and the initial prognosis was not good with him unable to move his arms or legs. He underwent an urgent operation led by Mr James Walkden, the Consultant Neurosurgeon, a first of its kind for Aberdeen.
Surgeons realigned Filip’s spine and fixed the bones in place, preventing damage to his spinal cord. After surgery Filip came round in the High Dependency Unit at RACH with his family by his side and the same evening was encouraged to start moving his legs. With the ongoing support of a wide team of doctors, nurses, physios and psychologists, this was the beginning of an incredible journey back to recovery.
To say thank you to the team who supported him and his family through such difficult days, Filip is undertaking the challenge of climbing the Eiffel Tower in July this year. Having thought he would never be able to walk again, he will now climb the 674 steps of the Eiffel Tower!
The money Filip raises will be used to buy a recliner chair for the High Dependency Unit which will allow other families to sit in a comfort by their child’s bedside. Money raised above this cost will fund a room in The Archie Foundation’s Family Centre where families can stay within RACH entirely free of cost to themselves whilst their child is a patient.
