MEMO FROM SAMMY FINE - to raise awareness about Admiral Nurses and Dementia UK.
THE RUTH FINE STORY
SADLY THIS STORY IS ONLY ONE OF HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS AND SOON TO BE MILLIONS, AND MY EXPERIENCE OF THE LAST TEN YEARS , HAS TAUGHT ME THAT DEMENTIA IS A DREADED AND DEVASTING INCURABLE DISEASE, WHICH UNFORTUNATELY , SO MANY FAMILIES ARE HAVING TO LIVE WITH.
MY WIFE RUTH, AFTER NEARLY 64 YEARS OF MARRAIGE , IN FACT WE MET WHEN SHE WAS JUST FIVE AND I WAS NOT YET SEVEN, SADLY PASSED AWAY 29th Nov 2020 AFTER TEN YEARS OF ALZHEIMER`S WITH HALF OF THAT TIME SPENT IN FULL TIME CARE.
DURING THAT PERIOD I VISITED THE CARE HOME HUNDREDS OF TIME AND HAVE SPENT THOUSANDS OF HOURS IN READING AND CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THIS MOST DREADED OF DISEASES.
BY THE TIME MY WIFE WENT INTO CARE IN JUNE 2015,THERE WERE VERY FEW NORMAL
NORMAL MOMENTS WHEN SHE KNEW WHO I WAS SO I TREID TO COINCIDE SOME OF MY VISITS WITH SOCIAL ACTIVITIES SUCH AS ENTERTAINERS AND FILM SHOWS, WHICH HELPED ME THROUH THOSE DIFFICULT HOURS WHEN OFTEN NOT A SINGLE WORD WAS SPOKEN THAT I COULD UNDERSTAND.
SINCE MARCH 2020 AS THE CORONA VIRUS GOT INTO IT`S STRIDE WE WERE OFFERED A TOTAL OF JUST 5 VISITS WHICH THE FAMILY SHARED , ALL IN THE GARDENS, WITH ONE COMPLETELY RAINED OFF, AND A FINAL END OF LIFE VISIT WHICH WE WAY WATCHED HER DYING THROUGH A WINDOW WHILE OUR SO SAD AN ENDING WAS BY NO MEANS UNIQUE, WE ALSO REALISED HOW DIFFICULT THESE TIMES WERE FOR THE AMAZING CARING ANGELS, WHO ALONG WITH ALL THE EXTRA WORK BROUGHT ON BY THE VIRUS, STILL HAD TO FIND THE TIME TO STIMULATE THE "WELL" RESIDENTS WHEN VISITORS INCLUDING ACTIVITY LEADERS AND ENTERTAINERS WERE NOT ALLOWED IN, IN ADDITION TO AN ALREADY MASSIVE WORK LOAD, HAD TO CONTINUE WITHOUT ANY OUTSIDE HELP OF BOTH PAID AND VOLENTEER ACTIVITY LEADERS,
ON THE NIGHT OF MARCH 23RD 2020, WITH THE IDEA OF BEATING BOREDOM I DECIDED TO WRITE " A RHYME A DAY, TILL THE VIRUS GOES AWAY" AND I DID INFACT COMPOSE 222 RHYMES IN 222 DAYS TO THE DATE OCTOBER 30TH 2020 WHEN THE MANAGER AT HER CARE HOME CALLED US TO BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST. ….. I KNOW VERY LITTLE OF THE WORKINGS OF JustGiving , OR IN FACT OF ANY UP TO DATE FINANCING SCENARIOS, but MY RESPONSIBILITY WILL BE CONFINED TO COMPOSING & RAISING AWARENESS. – to raise awareness about Admiral Nurses and Dementia UK. Dementia UK are specialist in one-to-one support and expert advise and help people living with dementia through their unique Admiral Nurses, who work hand in hand with families, helping them to cope with the fear, uncertainty and difficult everyday reality of dementia.

I am making original writings and poems available, written over almost eight decades, including the above mentioned 222 Rhyme a Day Collection, Sammy’s Inspirational Poems (SIP a Day), Serious About Memories (SAM), Ruth’s Story/Our love story., Months of the Year. These collections are published in the coming months on my Instagram page. Some of it is read out by me. https://www.instagram.com/sammys.inspirational.poems/ IN CONCLUSION THIS IS MY WAY SAYING THANK YOU TO the AMAZING Admiral CARERS.
