Story
On 12th October 2024 I am participating in a sponsored Abseil down the 106 ft tower to raise funds for the maintenance of Leominster Priory. This magnificent building has an interesting history. Originally founded about 660, it was refounded by King Henry I, along with Reading Abbey, following the loss of his son and heir in the White Ship disaster of 1121. Henry gave Leominster Priory and, much of its rich income from wool, to Reading Abbey. In 1539 Henry VIII dissolved and demolished Reading Abbey, but Reading's daughter church at Leominster lost only its monastic parts. The rest, including the Normal nave, are beautiful survivors, still used by the parish and the wider community. Having lived in Reading for years, and being familiar with Reading Abbey ruins, it was a delight to come to Leominster and find much of the linked Priory still standing.
Your support is much appreciated by everyone who gives their time and energies to keeping this valuable historical building alive and well maintained!
