Story
Hi there,
I'm so pleased you are here. Let me tell you why I’m taking on the challenge of trekking Iceland next year to raise vital funds for the Prospect Hospice in Wroughton, Swindon.
We hoped never to need their services but reality proved otherwise in 2020 as the pandemic started. My gorgeous son in law Harry Martin was shockingly diagnosed and subsequently paralysed by a rare aggressive glioblastoma located in his spinal column. Devastatingly, Harry passed away 13 months later at aged only 25 years old.
Prior to Harry’s illness, he was one of the fittest and healthiest people around. I was inspired by his capability and commitment to cycling, jogging, swimming, keeping fit at the gym and doing adventurous activities like skydiving, powerlifting and even as an extra in the film 1917.
We often sat together whilst Harry patiently waited for my daughter Sinéad to get ready to go out. Harry and I would discuss adventures I’d dreamed about, one of which was to see Iceland and more of the Arctic Circle. Harry was so encouraging whilst my daughter was concerned since I have a steel plate in my spine and she didn’t want me to take unnecessary risks.
Harry taught me that nothing is impossible, life is one big adventure which we should make the most of and dare to challenge ourselves. Just as I turned 60 this year, the Trek to Iceland was ‘presented’ to me. Inspired by Harry and my amazing daughter Sinéad (who completed the Sahara Trek this year), I am going to challenge myself in honour of Harry.
He would be delighted to see me achieve my ambition in his name and for such a worthy cause. Harry relied upon Prospect at Home services throughout his illness in the most challenging of circumstances. We also needed support from the hospice in the most despairing of times throughout Harry’s illness and after his sad passing.
We know first-hand that the extensive services offered to both patients and loved ones is vital to those with life limiting illnesses. Prospect Hospice can only continue with support from kind and caring people like you. So please support in any way you can. Much love to you, Frances xx
