Story
In 2020, our world was turned upside down when Dad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. This news hit our family hard. Before his diagnosis, Dad was a hardworking, dedicated, and compassionate man, always striving to provide the best for us, no matter the cost. He was our rock, our hero, and his diagnosis shook us to the core.
As Dad’s condition progressed, our family faced numerous challenges, including a decline in Dad’s physical abilities. He had to give up some of his favourite pastimes, like aviation, which had been a significant part of his life. To fill this void, he started exploring new activities, including buying a sports car and hiking and camping trips with my sister Penny and me. This trip sparked an idea in Dad’s mind: to hike the Larapinta Trail. No one got around to organising this trip. Then the unthinkable happened…
One day, Dad announced, “I want to walk the Kokoda Track, and I want you two to do it with me. You’ve got a few days to let me know, otherwise, I’m signing you up!” This moment marked a turning point. We saw Dad’s resolve not to let Parkinson’s define him, but instead to tackle it head-on, just as he had always done with everything. Mum, despite being understandably concerned, worried, and even scared about the physical demands of hiking the Kokoda Track, stood by Dad’s decision, knowing Penny and I would be with him every step of the way.
Training for the Kokoda Track began in earnest. Unlike the Larapinta idea, I was enthusiastic about the challenge. I was also nervous at the thought of how Dad would go in such a harsh environment. Dad worked tirelessly every day to prepare for what is known as one of the world’s most challenging treks. On March 11th, we said our goodbyes to our families and set off on our journey!
Kokoda was physically demanding, underscoring the importance of our training. But beyond the physical challenges, the emotional journey was even more profound. Waiting for Dad to appear over a hill into the campsite each day, sometimes after dark, was incredibly tough. Yet, seeing his exhausted but smiling face each time reassured me of his unbreakable spirit.
Dad’s ability to manage his fatigue and symptoms in such a harsh environment was awe-inspiring. He even found the strength to support and encourage those around him, leaving a lasting impression on those who trekked with us. Even the porters who supported us remarked that they had never seen anyone as strong, tough, and determined as Dad.
We completed the trek with immense relief, excitement, and satisfaction. But before we could settle back into our ordinary lives, it was suggested we do it again, this time to raise funds for those living with Parkinson’s.
Now, the training begins anew as we look to embark on trekking Kokoda again with Kokoda Courage in March 2025! We invite you to support us, follow our journey on social media, and donate to help inspire and support others living with Parkinson’s.
By donating to The Hospital Research Foundation Group - Parkinson’s, you are honouring Dad’s inspirational journey and helping to make a difference in the lives of those affected by this challenging condition. Thank you for being a part of our story. Together, we can make a difference.
