Story
Ste and I are running the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon for Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust (ACT) on 3rd March 2024 in memory of Alistair Hunter and we’d love for you to sponsor us!
My dad was transferred to the neuro critical care unit (NCCU) at Addenbrooke's hospital on 21st September 2023 after a car accident. Addenbrooke's is the major trauma centre for the region and serves one of the largest populations in the country, as well as taking transfers from the rest of Europe and sometimes even worldwide. We spent a week with dad in the NCCU and whilst he sadly passed away on 28th September, the care he (and us as relatives) received was second to none, with the huge amounts of expertise and knowledge from all of the doctors and nurses involved in dad’s care, and especially from the ICU nurses who did their jobs with such kindness whilst reminding us to look after ourselves too.
Whilst my dad couldn’t be saved from this tragic accident, I’m so grateful to all those at Addenbrooke's in Resus/NCCU (as well as East Anglian Air Ambulance and the N&N) whose hard work meant that I got to spend a final few days by his side before a peaceful goodbye.
ACT is Addenbrookes' official charity and serves the whole hospital, dedicated to innovation and driving improvements to healthcare, providing a service that is over and above what can be achieved through NHS funding alone, as well as new services and facilities for the benefit of both patients and their families. Some of their current and recent work can be read about here.
We were supposed to be running a half marathon on the weekend of the accident but this of course didn’t happen so here’s to take two… wish us luck and please donate generously if you can !
