Story
A mountainous task lies ahead of us.
On April 27 nine Howards' accountants take on the Three Peaks Challenge. It’s all for a good cause. We’re raising money for Stafford-based House of Bread.
Three Peaks Challenge
Typically, the aim is to scale Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowden. Within 24 hours. They are the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales respectively. The Challenge involves walking 23 miles (37km). Our group will ascend 3,064 metres (10,052ft). The total driving distance is 462 miles.
Self-organised group
On this occasion, we’re participating as a self-organised group. Training is down to us. As is route planning and schedule preparation. Everyone must have the appropriate kit and provisions. We’ll need accommodation. Yes, it’s vital to have a plan. Of course, the Three Peaks routes are well traveled. Yet, in poor weather and low light they can be difficult to follow. In such conditions, navigation is via map and compass. We must be prepared.
Charity initiative
So, whose idea is it? Senior accountants Rachael Wilson and Darren Roberts brainstormed a company charity initiative. Darren remembered the Three Peaks Challenge. He’s the only one of our group to have reached all three summits before. But it was more than 20 years ago!
Our team
Clearly, the Three Peaks Challenge tests fitness and endurance. MD Matt Bailey will lead the trek. Darren and Rachael will encourage everyone to keep going. Accounts team members Charlie Beach, Alisha Simkins, Rhys Lapthorne, Gareth Pugh, Chris Adams and Jo Ward complete the intrepid nine. Then, of course, there’s the support team. Payroll manager Geraldine Astbury and tax specialist Martin Ousman are our dedicated drivers. It’s their job to get everyone from A to B. For safety’s sake, we couldn’t do it without them.
House of Bread
We’re fundraising in aid of House of Bread. Founded in 2010, it supports vulnerable and homeless people in Stafford and surrounds. Key support involves hot meals, activities and drop-in sessions. The charity also operates food, toiletry and clothing banks. Its trained volunteers will listen. They help with basic housing advice, benefits help and support. As appropriate they signpost those in need to professional organisations.
