Story
In England, 1 in 4 children leave primary school unable to read well and 1 in 8 children aged 5-8 don't have a book of their own at home.
Poor literacy can have a devastating impact on a child's life. They're more likely to be unemployed, live in poverty, end up in the criminal justice system, and even have lower life expectancy. (A study that compared the life expectancy of children from communities with the highest and lowest vulnerability to literacy problems in the country, found a difference of 26.1 years).
Bookmark wants every child to develop the reading skills, confidence and enjoyment of reading that they need for a fair chance in life.
